Trump-Kim meeting - Just a Friendly Gesture or Something Fishy?

Trump surprised the whole world by promising to meet Kim in a non-military zone with his accurate diplomatic style. Kim and Trump's visit to North Korea was a historic one.

The meeting was held on June 30 in Panmunjom. Trump is the first US president to visit North Korea and invite Kim to visit the United States. If Kim visits the White House, he will be the first North Korean leader to do so. Of course, since the peace agreement has not yet been reached, the Korean War is not over.

Trump described the visit as "a special moment" and a "strong relationship," while Kim said "holding hands for peace" was a sign that he was looking forward to moving forward. "This visit is the beginning of a new era of peace ," said South Korean President Moon Jae-in. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called the visit " a unique opportunity to establish peace ."

This sends a clear message that both Washington and Pyongyang will continue this discussion in the future. Kim has taken a new step by meeting and welcoming Trump.

This means that Trump's method of working informally can be useful. Of course, Kim and Trump will also meet in July to continue this discussion . But, the question may also arise as to whether such visits will be planned in such a short period of time. But, if you really want to cast doubt on this, you have to start the discussion several months in advance to make such a visit. But, this informal style has attracted a lot of attention.

The last two meetings between North Korea and the United States did not agree on any issue. China has consistently pursued North Korea, and Trump's rhetoric has had no effect. Xi recently visited North Korea, underlining the message that China will always support North Korea. On the one hand, South Korea's diplomatic path and mediation seem to have upset Pyongyang. Pyongyang has strongly criticized Seoul and urged it not to try to mediate between North Korea and the United States. The two previous meetings between Kim and Trump were the result of discussions and efforts by Moon.

Criticizing South Korea's role, Kwon Jong-gun, head of the U.S. Department of State at North Korea's foreign ministry, reacted sharply, saying, " It would be better if South Korean officials just pay attention to what is going on in our country." Indeed after the meeting in Hanoi, North Korea's armaments test was a signal that Seoul should increase concessions on moneymaking warrants and apply North Korea's docket.

Of course, this visit is a positive step, but the question is what exactly it will achieve. The visit will be successful in attracting the attention of many or creating a third conference. However, the question of denuclearization of the Korean peninsula will continue. The acceptance of his leadership and political ability has always seemed like a virtual mirage to Kim, but it seems to have been achieved through this visit. Also, Kim knows very well how to use the issue of nuclear disarmament and he knows it. Although previous discussions have fizzled out, Trump has managed to recreate the discussion.

Of course, even if the leaders meet for a photo, at the same time the United Nations is discussing continuing and intensifying sanctions on North Korea. A joint letter was sent to all member states, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, on June 29, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Goal and the State Department's instructions, giving clear instructions to all member states to implement the sanctions imposed on North Korea . In other words, in the case of North Korea, it is clear that the formula of "repression and reward" is being followed by the United Nations. On the one hand, Trump is trying to negotiate a nuclear disarmament, while on the other, the United States is restricting North Korea's independence by imposing sanctions on North Korea.

But there is also the question of China's influence on the visit. Xi also met with both Trump and Kim in June. Therefore, the question remains as to how much responsibility Xi has for this historic visit. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during the G20 summit that Xi had called on the United Nations to lift sanctions on North Korea.

Although the meeting did not achieve a definite goal, it is clear that both countries are committed to the talks. Kim has given clear indications that taking a tough stance will not achieve anything. If the United States wants peace and nuclear disarmament, there is no other way but to negotiate.

The reunion of the two countries for talks after the abrupt end of the meeting in Hanoi is a very good sign in terms of establishing peace in the Korean Peninsula and the East Asian region.
